My career began in healthcare administration, where I developed an early understanding of the relationship between leadership, organizational systems, financial stewardship and the quality of services delivered to patients and communities.

I served with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care before moving into senior administrative roles at Metropolitan General Hospital and McMaster University’s Faculty of Health Sciences.

At Metropolitan General Hospital, I served as Director of Standards, with responsibilities extending across quality improvement, customer satisfaction, risk and loss control, management information systems, occupational health and safety, Employee Health Services, hospital security, budgeting, contract negotiations, labour relations and governance support.

I subsequently served as Manager of the Department of Medicine at McMaster University’s Faculty of Health Sciences. I was responsible for the financial, physical and human resources of a major academic clinical department comprising approximately 227 academic physicians, 96 research nurses and technicians, and 117 administrative staff. I worked with physician and academic leadership on strategic planning, resource allocation and organizational development, chaired the Department Managers’ Committee and participated in the re engineering of Chedoke McMaster Hospital.

I then moved into entrepreneurship and enterprise leadership. For more than 29 years I owned and operated financially successful businesses as President and owner of McCarthy Ellis Mercantile Ltd., ultimately leading a complex enterprise generating more than $30 million in annual revenue and employing more than 120 people.

That experience expanded my leadership perspective considerably. I was responsible for the full range of enterprise operations, including financial performance, P&L management, budgeting and forecasting, capital planning, facilities, fixed assets, workforce leadership, inventory, customer service, risk management, compliance and organizational sustainability.

I also served in a range of governance and community leadership roles, including Director of the Campbellford Memorial Hospital Foundation, member of the Trent Hills Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee, Director of a national dealer holding company, President of the Campbellford/Seymour Community Foundation, Director of the Trent Hills & District Chamber of Commerce and Director of the Campbellford Seymour Curling and Racquets Club. These experiences reinforced the importance of governance, accountability and the relationship between organizations and the communities they serve.

My academic background includes a Master of Health Sciences in Health Administration from the University of Toronto, a Master of Arts in Politics from Brock University and an Honours Bachelor of Arts in English and Political Science from McMaster University. I am also a Certified Health Executive and Life Member of the Canadian College of Health Leaders.

Today, I bring that combination to the people who deliver care in our communities, in two separate ways. As a Real Estate Sales Representative with RE/MAX Escarpment Realty Inc., Brokerage, I help clinics, health teams and practitioners find, lease and buy the right space. Separately, through my own independent consulting practice, I advise health organizations on setting up and running their operations, governance and leadership. It is the same work I have always done: understanding an organization, then helping it make sound decisions.

Across each chapter of my career, the common thread has been the same: understanding complex organizations, making sound decisions, taking responsibility for the outcome and building the systems and relationships required to move an organization forward.
