Consulting for Clinics and Health Organizations
Clinics and health organizations are being asked to grow faster than ever, often without the management depth of a hospital. I offer practical, experienced help to physicians, clinic owners, executive directors and boards who need to get something important right. I work with clients across Hamilton, Halton and Niagara.
I bring more than 30 years of leadership in health care and business. As Manager of the Department of Medicine at McMaster University's Faculty of Health Sciences, I was responsible for the finances, space and staff of a department of about 440 physicians, researchers and staff. As Director of Standards at Metropolitan General Hospital, I led quality, risk, health and safety, and information systems. I then owned and operated financially successful businesses for more than 29 years, growing to more than $30 million in annual revenue and over 120 employees across multiple sites.
I am a Certified Health Executive and a Life Member of the Canadian College of Health Leaders.
Consulting services are provided by Steven McCarthy personally, as an independent business.
Clinic Setup and Planning
Opening a new site or expanding an existing one? I help you work out the practical details before you commit:
How much space and how many rooms you need, now and in five years
How patients and staff will move through the clinic
What it will cost to open, and a realistic first-year budget
A staffing plan and recruitment timeline
An opening checklist covering policies, systems, equipment and suppliers
Health Care Operations
A clear outside look at how your organization is running, with a practical action plan your team can carry out:
Patient flow, scheduling and wait times
Staffing, roles and workload
Budgets, billing and cost control
Quality, risk and patient safety
Governance and Boards
Good governance keeps an organization focused and accountable. I work with boards of clinics, community health organizations, foundations and not-for-profits on:
Governance reviews: bylaws, committee structure and board policies
Strategic planning sessions that end with clear priorities
Board orientation and evaluation
The working relationship between the board and management
I have served as a director of the Campbellford Memorial Hospital Foundation, a member of the Trent Hills Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee, a community foundation president, and a director of a chamber of commerce and a community sports club, and I have written on quality and the board.
Interim Leadership
Short-term operational or executive leadership when you need it most: while you recruit, through a leadership transition, or during a major project such as an opening, a merger or a restructuring.
I step in quickly, keep operations steady, deal with the issues that cannot wait, and leave you with a clear written handover for your permanent leader.
How Engagements Work
A first conversation. We talk about what you need, at no cost and with no obligation.
A written proposal. Scope, deliverables, timeline and a fixed fee, agreed before any work begins.
The work. Regular check-ins, so there are no surprises.
The handover. A written report or plan your team can carry out.
Every engagement begins with a written agreement setting out the scope, fees and any potential conflicts of interest.
